Former Disney starlet and youngest X Factor judge, Miss Demi Lovato, had a critically and commercially successful 2012, sending her third studio album, Unbroken, to number four on the Billboard Top 200 while its two singles both became top twenty hits, with "Skyscraper" peaking at number ten and "Give Your Heart a Break" selling over a million digital downloads since its release. Instead of sending another single from the album to radio (hint hint, the dance gem title track, the heartbreaking "For the Love of a Daughter", or the catchy "Fix A Heart") Lovato has decided to ready an entirely new album with the release of a new lead single entitled "Heart Attack", set for a March 4 debut. Revealed on Feb. 12, the new electropop song premiered last night on Ryan Seacrest, days early as a gift from the young artist to her numerous devoted fans after an unexpected leak sprung. The song carries some similarities to those found on her last album, but a change is swirling inside Lovato once again.
"Heart Attack" moves away from the dance/pop vibe that dominated most of her last album effort, focusing on a sound similar to her early pop/rock material while more attention is paid on the electronic production and beat. Focus on production and instrumentals may be high, but Lovato's impressive vocals still shine bright and command center stage. The artist gives her best Kelly Clarkson impression, even going for some high notes towards the end of the track which would make a strong case for Lovato's need to be a successful pop star. Lyrically, the song stumbles at times with references to Ken dolls and basketballs, but a sense of vulnerability and insecurity overcomes the artist once the hook comes through the speakers. "You make me glow, But I cover up, won't let it show," Lovato sings on a track that definitely showcases growth.
Lovato's new single is good, that's probably the best way to describe it. It isn't amazing like "Skyscraper" or "Unbroken". It is not a song I find appealing enough to play over and over again as I do some of her past releases, but it continues paving the way for her pop domination. Is the track breathtaking or groundbreaking? Not really. But it does showcase ever-improving vocal talents and a change in sound for the 20-year-old artist who will soon already have four albums under her belt. With its angst message towards love, the new single could have been one released by Kelly Clarkson herself back in 2004, it has the same vibe, but still sounds modern enough to fit it with the rest of the current radio hits. As the lead single of her Spring 2013 album, "Heart Attack" is generating good buzz, but let's hope it's not the best moment on the upcoming project. Listen below.
