Reno Omokri, the special assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, on new media has instituted a law suit against Sahara Reporters and other media houses for publishing a story he considers libelous.
In the said report dated February 14, 2015, Sahara Reporters alleged that Mr Omokri and armed thugs working under his instructions burglerised a house in Warri, Delta State and carted away the sum of N25million naira meant to buy votes for President Jonathan during the March 28, presidential election.
The report further alleged that Omokri was hiding under the umbrella of the presidency to carry out all forms of lawlessness, including harassing, threatening, and intimidating occupants of his late mother’s property over a disputed property, which no court of competent jurisdiction had adjudicated on.
Denying the allegations leveled against him, Omokri said at the time that story was published, he was at his office in the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, where he received several visitors including a pastors and a senior Presidential aide. He also claims he was seen by the DSS agents attached to the villa.
The presidential aide also denied ever having anything to do with the tenant in question and has therefore instructed his lawyers to take legal action against Sahara Reporters for causing damage to his image.
“I fulfilled that promise and sued at the Delta State High Court of Justice. The man who made the allegation has in a sworn affidavit deposed to at the court, a copy of which I have attached, denied ever making those allegations to saharareporters.com.
Now that we have a sworn affidavit signed by the illegal occupant and deposed to in a court of law denying that he ever spoke to saharareporters.com, it is clear that the story was false and clearly an attempt to blackmail me.
This fellow is not even my tenant. He is a mere illegal occupant who is being evicted from my legal property, of which I have all the necessary documents, through a legal process yet without verification and investigation, saharareporters.com published his lies.
Now I have sued him for libel the illegal occupant is now denying that he never even granted any interview to saharareporters.com. He is claiming that saharareporters.com made up the whole story. Obviously, I know he is lying to save his own skin, but then this is the character that saharareporters.com relied upon to publish their libelous story about me.
Now that this illegal occupant had denied saharareporters.com, what are they going to do? This is precisely why my New York lawyers wrote them and also wrote their sponsors to ask them to apologize for slandering me or face consequences.”
Mr Omokri added that his Lawyers will base on the above evidence to sue Sahara Reporters directly and reserves the right to also sue other news outlets that carried the libelous story.
In the weeks building up to the general election, President Goodluck Jonathan, replaced Reno Omokri, with Obi Asika Omokri, due to alleged Twitter Blunders that showed that the president’s chances of winning the 2015 election were slim.
