Justin Bieber's manager slams Sunrise over riot

Justin Bieber with Sunrise hosts Melissa Doyle and David Koch on April 26, 2010.

JUSTIN Bieber's manager has forgiven but not forgotten Channel Seven's Sunrise for a disastrous incident back in 2010.

Scooter Braun mentions the breakfast show in an upcoming documentary called Bodyguards: Secret Lives from the Watchtower.

When discussing Bieber's need for protection, Braun says: "I think we started realising we needed security when thousands of people started showing up at radio stations.

"Then we went to Australia, and we told the Australians at this Sunrise TV show that we were going to need more security, and they didn't believe us, and then the kids rioted the streets."

Braun is referring to Bieber's first appearance on Sunrise in April 2010 when the then 16-year-old was meant to perform three songs for fans outside Sydney's Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Fans started camping out the night before and when the crowd swelled to an uncontrollable 5000 people in the morning, police forced Sunrise producers to cancel the performance.

When it was announced that Bieber would perform later that morning inside Channel Seven's Martin Place studios instead, thousands of teenage fans ran through peak hour traffic to get a glimpse of their idol through the Sunrise glass.

The riot squad were called in to keep things under control but even they struggled to keep the teenagers at bay.

Sunrise's former executive producer, Adam Boland, told news.com.au that Scooter Braun has every right to be upset about the incident.

"He's probably right — but I'm not sure any level of security could have prevented pre-teen girls from collapsing in the street merely at the thought of their idol sleeping at a hotel around the corner," he said.

"We had done big concerts almost every week for years and had never seen anything like it. It was a freak event that even scared the riot squad. Bieber was still on the rise at the time so we underestimated his fan base. It was a mistake we only made once."

Justin Bieber has performed on the Channel Seven breakfast show twice since then.
